The story
Ngorongoro was given its own conservation management in 1959 as a multiple-use area where wildlife protection and Maasai pastoral life could continue together. The crater itself is an ancient volcanic caldera with one of Africa's densest wildlife concentrations.
Olduvai Gorge inside the area carries deep human history, with fossil discoveries that helped explain early human origins. A visit here is wildlife safari and human heritage in one route.
